My favourite pessimist
(Arthur Schopenhauer)We spend our lives craving for things such as wealth, love, power, popularity and artistic achievement and suffer the pain of unfilled desire until we possess or attain them.However, when we do achieve the things we desire, they quickly lose their lustre. Before long, we are bored and dissatisfied with the very things we once craved:
"Desires are unlimited, its claims inexhaustible , and every satisfied desire gives birth to a new one. No possible satisfaction in the world could suffice to still its craving, set a final goal to its demands and fill the bottomless pit of its heart."
